The fire started in Pohukuloa Training Area  in July 2022 and was initially slowly burning   and was mapped on July 22 to have consumed 2400 acres. On August 10, 2022, strong winds with gusts up to 30 mph made the fire much more active and difficult to control, eventually consuming some 20,000 acres ,
