This is a Civil Defense Brush Fire update for Tuesday 08-08-2023 6 AM.

Hawaii Fire Department reports two brush fires in North and South Kohala:
1. In North Kohala District off of Akoni Pule Highway (Highway 270) near Kohala Ranch.
2. In South Kohala District in Waimea.

Fire personnel are on scene and smoke may be visible in these areas.

Due to the brush fires, be advised:

Hisaoka Gym in Kapaau and the Waimea Community Center in Waimea.

First mention of evacuation by Civil Defense (Police has been trying to warn residents since about 6:00 AM).
Note that "north and south of Ala Kahua Street" is confusing as Ala Kaua runs North-South within the Ranch.

This is a Civil Defense Brush Fire and Road Closure update for Tuesday, August 8th at 11 AM.

 Hawaii Fire Department reports the brush fire that started earlier today off of Akoni Pule Highway, Highway 270 near Kohala Ranch will require expanding the evacuation zone. 

At this time, Hawaii Fire Department is requesting the evacuation of the following residential areas;
Kohala Ranch, north and south of Ala Kahua Street
Kohala By the Sea
Kohala Waterfront
Kohala Estates

Evacuation Shelters have been opened in North Kohala at Hisaoka Gym in Kapaau and in Waimea at the Waimea Community Center.

Hawaii Fire Department reports that the brush fire in Waimea near Lalamilo subdivision has been restricted within containment lines.

This is a Civil Defense Brush Fire and Road Closure update for Tuesday, August 8th at 3 PM.

Hawaii Fire Department reports Akoni Pule Highway, Highway 270 near Kohala Ranch, remains closed at the 6 and 16 Mile Markers due to the brush fire.

The brush fire is estimated to have burned approximately 1,800 acres and is not contained.

Due to the active fire and continued threat of high winds in the area, a mandatory evacuation has been issued for the following residential areas;
Kohala Ranch
Kohala By the Sea
Kohala Waterfront
Kohala Estates

Evacuation Shelters are open in North Kohala at Hisaoka Gym in Kapaau and in Waimea at the Waimea Community Center.

Hawaii Fire Department reports that the brush fire in Waimea near Lalamilo subdivision has burned approximately 20 acres and continues to burn within  containment lines.

Please avoid these areas as Fire Crews remain on scene.

Evacuation update

This is a Civil Defense Evacuation update for Tuesday, August 8th at 6 PM.

At this time, Hawaii Fire Department has lifted the mandatory evacuations for;

Kohala By the Sea
Kohala Waterfront
Kohala Estates
Kohala Ranch between Kamakani Loop and Kohala Mountain Road, Highway 250.  

Those residents that evacuated from these areas may return at this time.

However, Kohala Ranch between Kamakani Loop to Akoni Pula Highway, Highway 270 remains under mandatory evacuation.

Brush Fire and Road Closures Update

This is a Civil Defense Brush Fire and Road Closure update message for Wednesday, August 9th at 4 AM.

 Hawaii Fire Department reports Fire Crews continue to battle 3 fires in North and South Kohala.  Due to these fires the following road closures remain in effect.

 Akoni Pule Highway, Highway 270 at the 6 and 17 Mile Markers, and Queen Kaahumanu Highway between the 69 Mile Marker and Kawaihae Junction, continue to remain closed.

 The mandatory evacuations for Kohala Ranch between Akoni Pule Highway and Kamakani Loop and the Mauna Kea Resort, North Fairways residential area remain in effect at this time.

A Red Flag Warning remains in place and critical fire weather conditions of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures makes for extreme fire danger.  Please postpone all outdoor activities using open flames and parking of vehicles on dry vegetation after driving.

 Hawaii Fire Department reports Fire Crews continue to battle 3 fires in North and South Kohala.  Due to these fires the following road impacts are in effect.

 Akoni Pule Highway, Highway 270 at the 6 and 17 Mile Markers remains closed and Queen Kaahumanu Highway is now open between the 69 Mile Marker and Kawaihae Junction.  Mauna Kea Beach Drive remains closed due to active firefighting and evacuations to some areas.

 The mandatory evacuations for Kohala Ranch between Akoni Pule Highway and Kamakani Loop and the Mauna Kea Resort, Villas residential area remain in effect at this time.

A Red Flag Warning remains in place and critical fire weather conditions of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures makes for extreme fire danger.  Please postpone all outdoor activities using open flames and parking of vehicles on dry vegetation after driving.

The Heathers mandatory evacuation is in still in effect


This is a Civil Defense Brush Fire and Road Closure update for Wednesday, August 9th at 3 PM.

Hawaii Fire Department reports additional brush fires in Kau near Naalehu and Pahala and report there are no road closures, no structures are threatened, and the fires in Kau are under control.

Fire Crews continue to battle the 3 fires in North and South Kohala.  

Due to these fires the following are in effect;

Akoni Pule Highway, Highway 270 at the 6 and 17 Mile Markers remains closed.  

Mauna Kea Beach Drive on Mauna Kea Resort remains closed due to active firefighting.

The mandatory evacuations on Kohala Ranch between Akoni Pule Highway and Kamakani Loop and on Mauna Kea Resort at the Villas residential area remain in effect at this time.

The National Weather Service Red Flag Warning for leeward areas of Hawaii Island remains in effect as critical fire weather conditions of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures makes for extreme fire danger.

This is a Civil Defense Brush Fire and Road Closure update for Wednesday, August 9th at 4 PM.

Hawaii Fire Department reports Akoni Pule Highway, Highway 270 in Kohala, which was closed earlier due the brush fire in the area, is reopened and the mandatory evacuations of Kohala Ranch is lifted, at this time.

The mandatory evacuation on Mauna Kea Resort at the Villas residential area remains in effect and Mauna Kea Beach Drive remains closed due to active firefighting.

The National Weather Service Red Flag Warning for leeward areas of Hawaii Island remains in effect as critical fire weather conditions of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures makes for extreme fire danger. 

Please postpone and avoid all outdoor activities using open flames and parking of vehicles on dry vegetation after driving.

Brush Fire, Road Closure and Evacuation Updates

This is a Civil Defense Brush Fire, Road Closure, and Evacuation update for Wednesday, August 9th at 4:30 PM.

Hawaii Fire Department reports Akoni Pule Highway, Highway 270 in Kohala, and Mauna Kea Beach Drive which were closed earlier due the brush fires in these areas are reopened, and the mandatory evacuations of Kohala Ranch and Mauna Kea Resort at the Villas residential area are lifted, at this time.

There are no road closures and no active evacuations at this time.

The evacuation shelters that were established at Hisaoka Gym in Kapaau and the Waimea Community Center in Waimea will be closing at 8 PM this evening.

The National Weather Service Red Flag Warning for leeward areas of Hawaii Island remains in effect as critical fire weather conditions of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures makes for extreme fire danger.
